Egg/Embryo Donation

Egg Donation

A fertile woman can donate an egg, or oocyte, to another woman to aid her in getting pregnant. It is a component of ART or assisted reproductive technology.

Eggs from the donor (donor eggs) are normally removed during the oocyte retrieval procedure, fertilized in a lab, and the resulting embryos are subsequently placed in the uterus of the recipient. Techniques like in vitro fertilization are used by reproductive doctors to extract as well as implant these eggs in another woman.

Sperm Donation

Semen is collected and given or donated during the procedure of sperm donation. The fluid or thick liquid that is released during ejaculation is called semen. This is a treatment to help a couple or a single person become pregnant. When the sperms are retrieved, they are preserved in a laboratory environment until they are needed and afterward inseminated into the reproductive organs of the female. This is also referred to as intrauterine insemination or iui procedure.

A systematic and detailed screening procedure that may require multiple visits must be completed before a man can donate his semen

A potential donor is immediately ineligible to provide sperm if they meet the following criteria:

Men who have a family history of certain illnesses, such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anaemia, are not eligible to give sperm. Men who are homosexual or who have had sex with another man are not eligible to give sperm. Men who have been to regions where there have been a significant number of AIDS cases.
